Bible translations into Portuguese
Bible translations into Portuguese were made from the 13th century onwards, but the first complete translation without the deuterocanonical books appeared only in 1753, followed by a full translation including the deuterocanonicals in 1790. In more recent times a wide range of complete translations has appeared.
== Early partial translations ==

The earliest known Bible translation into Portuguese was that of King Denis of Portugal (1261–1325), who translated the first 20 chapters of Genesis into the language that he made the official language of Portugal. The text has not survived. Monks of the Alcobaça Monastery also translated the Acts of the Apostles. The learned King John I of Portugal, who held the throne from 1385 to 1433, had a new translation made that encompassed the Psalms and much of the New Testament, largely translated by the king himself.〔(Gottfried Brakemeier, ''A Autoridade da Bíblia'' (Editora Sinodal 2003 ISBN 978-85-233-0716-5), p. 11 )〕
In 1505 Queen Dowager Leonor of Viseu, who used her great wealth for charity, had a new translation made of the Acts of the Apostles and of the General Epistles: those of James, Peter, John and Jude. A translation of the Psalms by Gómez de Santofímia was published in 1529, with a second edition in 1535. The Jesuít Luiz Brandão translated the four Gospels.
A pause in translating the Bible into Portuguese occurred when in 1547, the Portuguese Inquisition, which had been established in 1536, forbade possession of Bibles in vernacular languages, allowing only the Latin version. António Pereira Marramaque, who in the 1530s had written on the usefulness of vernacular translations of the Bible, was denounced for possession of one.
